However, Crete has something unique in its lively bustling cities and its remote seaside and mountain villages. It is an island with a vibrant sense of daily life, with honest and warm hospitality.

The largest and most southerly of the Greek islands, Crete has a fascinating landscape of majestic, rugged mountains, deep ravines, vast fertile plains, and a coastline strewn with sandy beaches. The climate is considered one of the mildest in Europe. There is an abundance of historical sites scattered along the north coast. The resorts in this area vary from simple and quiet to sophisticated and bustling.

The coastal resort of Hersonissos is one of the liveliest in Crete. The long, narrow, sandy beach is the perfect place to relax by day or to enjoy a variety of watersports. There is a fine selection of shops, bars, tavernas and restaurants, while several discos and nightclubs account for the vibrant nightlife.

Amoudara is a busy, yet peaceful resort. You can laze on the lovely sandy beach, with the opportunity to explore the sights and sounds of nearby bustling Heraklion, which, with its fortress, harbour, museums, fountains, squares and numerous historic sites, not to mention the fascinating markets and shops, is well worth a visit. Amoudara itself has plenty of tavernas, restaurants, bars and shops to visit while retaining its own friendly atmosphere.
