Perhaps the most distinctive characterstics of all are the whitewashed houses and churches and the brightly painted wooden doors and balconies which are so typical of Mykonos. These are interspersed with pretty little tavernas, boutiques and shops selling souvenirs.

The countryside of Mykonos is a mixture of grey-green rocks ringed by prickly pear plants and little fertile areas carpeted with wild flowers. Here and there are tiny whitewashed chapels and windmills.
